Introduction
The hosting of international events by cities is often seen as an opportunity to create immense growth and development opportunities. These opportunities are often called “legacies”, and they include objectives and strategies based on the events themselves. The article is research presented to understand the application of the term “event legacy”, identify barriers that hinder progress towards achieving the event legacies, and identify what is expected to be the sports legacies. The thesis statement for this critical article is that the research is relevant and true to its topic.
Significance
The significance of the article is to evaluate the whole aspect of event legacies. This is important for informing any other cities that wish to host sport events on the potential pitfalls and benefits. The article offers more information than others because it uses a comprehensive literature review which covers the whole concept of legacies right from the origin of the term legacies up to the development of different types of legacies such as sports and urban legacies.
The timing of the research is very appropriate as it has been conducted before the summer Olympics are held in Tokyo in the year 2020. It will, therefore, present the appropriate means for the people arranging and funding the event to focus their efforts on the important aspects that will lead to the realization of the event legacies.
Strength and weaknesses
Several strengths and weaknesses can also be drawn from the article. The author concentrates too much on the literature review and does not transfer much of what is captured in it to the methodology section. Rather than using the literature review as a means for gathering the data to be evaluated in the methodology section and analyzed in the results part, it is a lengthy section with the gaps being identified in the last few paragraphs. Also, in the methodology section, the author states that they will only study the identified gaps, but they end up studying other aspects.
The strengths are that the article addresses a current issue in sports that needs a lot of attention. The findings suit the introduction and are presented in an orderly manner. It is important to note that the article also indicates areas of further studies based on the identified gaps. This gives relevance to the article and makes it appropriate for use as a valid reference material. The areas of further studies are directly linked to the topic and will, therefore further widen the knowledge base.
Conclusion
The article succeeds in providing the reader with information regarding sports legacies and the expectations that could be derived from them. It is of great use to any organizations of individuals who wish to bid for hosting rights, helping them know what they are getting in to so that they can make a wise and informed decision before investing any of their time and effort.
